SanDisk Offers Extreme SSDs

SanDisk is taking its solid-state drive (SSD) range to the extreme. The flash memory storage company unveils its Extreme SSD line that promises to provide performance up to 10 times faster than a 7,200RPM hard disk drive. Such a drive gives computers a much faster boot and shut down, as well as anything in between. Random read/ write speeds are claimed to reach 83,000x44,000 IOPS, with 550MB/s and 520MB/s sequential speeds.

The SanDisk Extreme SSD comes in two variants. The 120GB and 240GB models are available at $190 and $400 respectively.

According to the folks at Android Central, HTC will be giving some of its customers an early preview of its Android Ice Cream Sandwich updates. The update is expected to rollout to members of the HTC “Elevate” beta program first before everyone else. Unfortunately for folks in the US, this only applies to the HTC Sensation and Sensation XE in Europe, though we're pretty sure it'll be ported over for the T-Mobile Sensation 4G in no time.

Just yesterday we reported that despite rumors of Sharp's IGZO displays not meeting the yield rates set by Apple, there was still a possibility of Apple utilizing said displays for their upcoming iPad 3. Thanks to Japanese blog Macotakara, the photo you are looking at above appears to be a component allegedly belonging to the display that Sharp will providing Apple for their iPad 3. Granted this could be pretty much any component manufactured by Sharp, it was acknowledged that Sharp had IGZO display panels manufactured (although they have yet to make their way into commercial products), so this could very well be one of those components.

2011: the year Smartphones supplanted computers, at least according to the bundle of spreadsheets that just arrived from Canalys Research. Vendors shipped (shipped, not sold) 488 million of the devices, compared to 414.6 million “PCs,” which erroneously includes Tablet PCs of all shapes and sizes. Looking at Smartphones exclusively (IDC's numbers from yesterday concerned all mobile handsets), Apple remains king of the hill having shipped 93.1million iPhones. Samsung is close behind, with 91.9 million and Nokia is kicking along in third with 19.6 million.

Excluding tablets, to which Canalys refers to as “pads”, the PC industry's shipments contracted by 0.4 percent.

That update was 6.12.173 and was found to be signed for an official release even though it wasn’t known whether or not it was a final, official build. . Google announced on Thursday that the company has begun to take a more active approach to keeping malware out of the Android Market. The search giant is using aÂ new service called “Bouncer” to search through the Market for potential malware. Bouncer will scan new applications, ones already in the Market, and developer accounts for known malware, spyware, trojans and misbehaving apps. The service has been running for some time and between the first and second halves of 2011, the company reports a 40% decrease in the number of potentially-malicious downloads from the Android Market.

Heather Peters sued Honda in small-claims court in Torrance, California over the gas mileage she was getting in her Honda Civic Hybrid, which was around 20 miles per gallon less than Honda had advertised.
